Social Media: A Social Issue?
Social media is a computer-based technology that facilitates the sharing of ideas thoughts and information through the building of virtual networks and communities. By design, social media as Internet-based and gives Users quick electronic communication of content.
Human beings are social creatures, we thrive on others’ companionship. The meaning of the word social has evolved through the ages, these days how social you are is equivalent to how many followers or friends you have on the internet. Everyone is obsessed with social media these days. Our vocabulary now includes verbs like unfriend, follow, troll and abbreviations like LOL, TY, OMG.
Social media is both a blessing and a curse and we stand in need of a complete understanding to make sure we use it in a way that does not harm us or others.
Negatives and its effects:
1. Addiction- social media is highly addictive, for example you open Instagram to give someone birthday wishes but end up scrolling the feed for two hours. It makes you unproductive and can cause anxiety and procrastination.
2. FOMO (Fear of Missing Out)- Social media sites can sometimes make you feel as if other people’s lives are better than yours. As a consequence, it nurtures the feeling of jealousy and lowers your self-esteem.
3.Health issues-The excess use of social media can have a negative impact on health since Exercise is the key to reduce obesity most of the people get lazy because of excessive use of social networking sites which in result brings disorder in the routine life. This research by seeker will shock you by showing how bad your health can be affected by the use of social media.
4.Data insecurity and privacy Issues- Social media compromises consumer data daily. Hackers are capable of breaching net security and misusing your information. This is a very serious crisis that people all over the world should be made aware of.
5.Cyberbullying- Cyberbullying has become very common nowadays, especially among youngsters. Any content posted on the internet may lead to criticism or offensive comments. All your information is picked and judged by countless people. This can cause extreme psychological and emotional stress.
1. Our friends and family are just a touch of a button apart. We can communicate our happiness and grief on a large scale.
2. We can raise awareness about important things, show solidarity and support. Promote small businesses or social causes.
3. One can find communities and people who share the same interests. It enables you to make new friends and acquaintances.
4. These days people can express themselves immensely through social media, be it a meme or a tweet or a comment.
5. Social media has a lot of benefits for students and teachers. It gives students an opportunity to learn at anytime and anywhere. It helps teachers to reach out various students across the globe.
6. Social media is a major source of entertainment and information for many of us.
Solutions:
It is important to remember that social media is only a small part of our life, there are numerous other significant things in life. If you encounter cyberbullying on a site, put an end to it or report to helplines on the said site.
Avoid sharing negative and criticizing posts.
Find new things that interest you.
Limit the amount of time spent online. You can also use various apps like "digital well-being" to ensure this.
"End that google meet and go meet your friends!"
Considering all the above aspects we can conclude that everything in this world has its own advantages and disadvantages, so it depends on us how we use it.
Using social media is not an issue but using it for any unpleasant means is definitely unhealthy!
