AI REVOLUTION: THE EFFECTS

The world is now at a point where technology touches almost every aspect of human life. A revolution is defined as a sudden, complete or a marked change in something. Humanity has witnessed three industrial revolutions namely steam power, electricity followed by computing. The world is now in the midst of the fourth revolution, the one driven by artificial intelligence and massive data.

AI revolution is changing the world as we know it. Artificial Intelligence(AI) gives machines, which includes computers, robots, etc. an ability to ‘Think’ which previously only humans could. It means that these machines somehow can understand the world around them, learn from the situation and the data they gather and eventually make the right decision. Hence, in order to make smarter decisions, a machine needs to have access to more and more data.

Today, we are surrounded by tremendous amounts of data. The credit for this goes to storage systems like cloud computing which gives us the ability to store tremendous amounts of data. Without storage systems, simply gathering data would be useless. Unimaginable leaps in computerization and digitalization have given us the ability to access more data than ever. Due to this, AI has been able to grow tremendously in a very short while.

The simplest example is of the OTT platforms. More you watch, more accurate are the recommendations. Considering it as the fourth industrial revolution, the AI revolution is definitely going to have an enormous impact on the society and human life.

Now there are two aspects to look at the forthcoming effects. Some would be excited to live in a society where machines help humans to solve the biggest challenges and in general, make human life easier. While, there are others who think that this would be the dawn of a new era in which machines dominate the planet which would mean the ultimate end of human race. So let’s look at a few predictable positive and negative effects caused due to this revolution.

·      ADVANTAGES

1.  Considering the effects of the three previous revolutions, living    truly doesn’t seem possible without them. Artificial Intelligence has applications in a wide range of fields.

2AI put to work can help reduce human errors.

3. The risk taking limitations on humans would be resolved as an AI  robot can take up to those tasks.

4.  Doing repetitive work has always been monotonous to humans.      This can be avoided using Artificial Intelligence. And, the  provision of work would be 24/7.

5.    Faster and appropriate decisions considering all aspects can be   facilitated.

6. In medical sector, it would be of great help for quick diagnostics.

7.   Digital assistance during the day-to-day chores is possible.

These few of many more applications truly create a better image of the society and provides humans with an uplifted standard of living.

·      ADVERSE EFFECTS

Everything in excess could be dangerous and so is the case with Artificial Intelligence.

1.   The most important barrier with AI is the extreme high                installation cost. Apart from installation, it also requires repair and    maintenance periodically

2.   No matter how smart a machine is , it cannot possess the human traits of emotions and  moral values which is why they lack judgement skills.

3.    AI cannot differentiate between what’s legal and what’s ethical which is of high importance.

4.    Machines cannot possess creativity. Humans have the ability to create and generate new ideas and think out of the box which obviously a machine cannot.

5.    AI could also be responsible for making humans lazy by taking up most of their desirable tasks which would eventually lead to health related disorders.

6.    In addition to above, unemployment is the major problem that AI revolution could cause. With their ability to possess new skills in no time, AI could replace humans at several tasks creating major unemployment issues.

All being put forth, the impact of AI depends on the perspective of humans. Towards the end, one needs to forget this difference of opinion and accept that irrespective of all, we are amidst the revolution and we should be ready for it. As the old saying is “ Necessity is the mother of invention” and so is the case with AI.  But it does not imply that we shouldn’t consider all the applications thoroughly or work hard to ensure ethical and fair use of AI.

The bottom line is that whatever may be the consequences, all humans collectively should strive and work for whatever leads us to a better society and a healthier place to live in.
